National Marine Mammal Foundation

As part of their Dolphin Doctor Program, I created a large-scale interactive model to be used by the National Marine Mammal Foundation to demonstrate how a bottlenose dolphin’s body acclimates to diving.

The exterior is a 3D print covered with silicone, to give a more realistic texture. The interior has 3 major elements. First being the ribs, which are flexible allowing compression for diving. Second are the lungs, a take on a bell jar experiment forcing the balloon inside to expand and collapse. The third is the spleen, when squeezed it releases blood visualizing the concentrations dolphins store during a dive.
